Celebrating Disability Pride Month: Empowering Healthy Relationships and Sexual Health for Women with Disabilities

July is Disability Pride Month, a time dedicated to honoring the achievements, history, and struggles of the disability community. This month is not just about celebrating diversity but also about fostering a deeper understanding and awareness of the issues faced by disabled people.

Women with disabilities often face a double bind of discrimination due to both their gender and disability. This intersectionality can lead to significant barriers in various aspects of life, including education, employment, healthcare, and personal relationships. One area that requires urgent attention is the realm of sexual health and healthy relationships.

Recognizing this, the Women’s Fund for the Fox Valley Region supported SOAR Fox Cities with a $10,000 grant for their Brillant Women program, an educational program to empower women with disabilities to build and navigate personal, professional, and romantic relationships safely and appropriately. Through this program, women with disabilities will obtain the social skills necessary to pursue their life and career goals.

This program is unique as it addresses the misconceptions and stereotypes about women with disabilities as these misconceptions can lead to inadequate sexual education, lack of access to sexual health services, and even violations of reproductive rights. Access to comprehensive sexual education tailored to their needs is essential for women with disabilities to make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships.

Brilliant women also helps women build healthy relationships that are built on respect, trust, and open communication. For women with disabilities, forming and maintaining such relationships can be challenging due to societal prejudices and lack of support. Ensuring that women with disabilities have the resources and opportunities to engage in healthy relationships is crucial for their emotional and psychological well-being.

As we celebrate Disability Pride Month this July, let’s commit to advocating for the rights and well-being of women with disabilities, ensuring they have the support and resources they need to thrive in all aspects of their lives.

The Women’s Fund is proud to support SOAR Fox Cities in their work with women with disabilities in our community and encourage you to follow their socials and sign up for their mailing list to stay up to date with their work in our community.
